New home features for 2020
If buying a new construction property is on your radar in 2020, you can expect a walk-in closet, low-E windows, and energy-efficient lighting. According to a new report, these are the features builders are most likely to include in new properties this year.
Features you’ll find in 2020 new construction
According to new data from the National Association of Home Builders, walk-in master closets and low-E windows are the features you’re most likely to find in this year’s new construction.
Builders also say they’re looking to include efficient lighting options, great rooms, kitchen islands, programmable thermostats, and Energy Star appliances. Nine-foot ceilings on the first floor, front porches, and exterior lighting are all on high their lists, too.
In the kitchen, walk-in pantries and granite countertops are likely — a smart move, considering walk-in pantries are one of the most-coveted features with first-time homebuyers.

Hard-to-find new construction features
What you won’t find in new construction this year? That’d be cork flooring, geothermal heat pumps, and solar water heating. These all ranked at the bottom of builders’ planned features list.
Dual toilets in the master bathroom, laminate countertops, and pet washing stations are also unlikely. Add-on spaces like sunrooms, media rooms, and outdoor kitchen spaces aren’t high on builders’ lists, either.
According to Rose Quint, assistant vice president for survey research, new construction featured tend to vary based on several factors.
“Home builders make a lot of decisions about how to run their businesses every day,” Quint said. “Among their most critical determinations is what features to include in the homes they build. Experience, region, trends, target audience, and many other factors play a role in a decision that directly affects their bottom line.”
