Top dream home features
The American dream home has white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and granite countertops. According to a new study, Americans across all generations overwhelming prefer these features when buying a home.
The dream home by generation
A new survey from the National Association of Home Builders looks at aesthetic preferences by generation. Across all groups — Millennials, Gen Xers, Baby Boomers, and Seniors — stainless steel appliances were the clear favorite.
Nearly three-quarters of Generation X buyers said they prefer stainless steel appliances, while 65 percent of Boomers and Seniors did. Millennials were close behind at 64 percent. About a quarter of Millennials like black appliances, though they rank low among other cohorts.
On countertops, there’s also a clear-cut favorite: granite or natural stone. These features are preferred by more than 60 percent of Millennials and Gen Xers and over half of Boomers and seniors. Only a small fraction of each generation prefers laminate countertops. More than a quarter of seniors also like quartz.
When it comes to cabinetry, white is the top-ranking preference among all generations. Nearly 40 percent of seniors say they prefer white cabinets, while around a third of Millennials and Boomers say the same. Gen Xers like white cabinets or medium brown ones.
Other preferences
NAHB did a deeper dive into the Millennial dream home early last month. The analysis showed younger buyers largely prefer suburban living.
They also want full-size laundry rooms, hardwood exteriors, patios, and walk-in pantries.

What Millennials don’t care about? Wine cellars, golf course access, laminate flooring, or stucco. These all rank among Millennials’ least-wanted features according to NAHB.
