Florida, Utah top the lists

Where are the nation’s oldest and youngest homeowners? According to a new analysis, older homebuyers flock to warmer climes in Florida, Arizona and Hawaii. Younger ones? You’ll find them in Utah, Iowa and Texas.

The country’s oldest homeowners

When it comes to average homeowner age, Florida claims seven of the oldest 10 cities. According to a new analysis from LendingTree, the Sunshine State’s North Port, Cape Coral, Deltona, Palm Bay, Lakeland, Tampa and Miami all made the top 10.

In North Port, the average homeowner is 63.3 — nearly 10 years higher than the national average of 54. The Cape Coral average age is 61.5, while Deltona’s is slightly lower at 60.2.

Non-Florida cities to make the top 10 were Honolulu; Tucson, Arizona; and Scranton, Pennsylvania — the only Northern spot to rank.

The nation’s youngest homeowners

Three Utah cities made the list for youngest homeowners, with Provo taking the top spot. The average homeownership age in the city is just 47.3.

Utah’s Ogden and Salt Lake City also made the list, with average ages of 49.4 and 50.1, respectively. Provo and Ogden are the only two cities on the list with average ages under 50.

First-time homebuyers: These are best places to move

Other cities with young homeowners include Des Moines, Iowa; Austin, Houston and McAllen, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Omaha, Nebraska; and Minneapolis.

“It’s no secret that young and old people gravitate toward different parts of the country,” wrote LendingTree economist Tendayi Kapfidze. “Florida is a well-known haven for retirees, while places such as San Francisco and Austin, Texas, have emerged as millennial boomtowns over the past few years.”
